TECHNOLOGY TRAINING: Using Story Editor in InDesign

The Story Editor feature in InDesign allows you to view all your copy for a complete story—regardless of number of text boxes. Story Editor also shows you if there is a text overset and how much. Learn how to use this feature.

To get to the text editor, click in the text box of the story you wish to view. Go to the Edit menu and choose Edit in Story Editor. A window will pop up with the whole story. At the bottom, you will see a red line on the left that will indicate the text overset, if there is any.

When you type or edit in the window, it will change the text in the text boxes. You can also apply style sheets in the Story Editor window the same way you do in your text boxes.

If you decide to use the Story Editor, change your font to match what you are using in your story. This will allow you to see bold and italicized words. To do this, click the InDesign menu and choose Preferences, Story Editor Display. You can then choose the font. You also have options to change the background color, choose a theme, text color, or font size in the display to make editing easier.
